In collaboration with Sphinx Cinema, we present the restored version of the Spanish cult classic Arrebato (Rapture).
Horror director José drifts in a sea of doubt and drugs. As his long-awaited second film nears completion, his reclusive existence is disrupted by a package from an old acquaintance, Pedro, containing a roll of Super‑8 film, an audiotape and a door key… What follows is a hallucinatory journey that blurs the boundaries of time, space, and queer sexuality. As José is once again drawn into Pedro’s vampiric orbit, they attempt to achieve the ultimate hallucinogenic catharsis through a Möbius strip of filming and being filmed. Arrebato is a daring love letter to the all-consuming power of cinema – film as the ultimate drug.
After its premiere, Arrebato stayed for a year on the late-night weekend program at the Alphaville Cinema in Madrid, gaining its cult status. Later, the film disappeared from circulation, shrouded in legend. The recent restoration has led to its rediscovery, and it has since been enthusiastically screened in New York and other world cities.
